Nathan Powell is a dancer, teacher and choreographer based in Boise, Idaho, USA.

He has danced with numerous companies including Ballet Idaho for nine seasons. Originally from Regina, Saskatchewan, he received his professional training at Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet School where he won the CIBC World Markets award for Innovation at the First Steps Choreographic Competition in 2004.

He won a RBC Youth Excellence Scholarship in 2006 as a member of Festival Dance at the Banff Centre. Nathan performed with Northern Plains Ballet for one season before joining Festival Ballet Providence for three seasons under Mihailo Djuric. At FBP he danced many of the classic ballets, Agnes De Mille’s Rodeo and Antony Tudor’s Leaves are Fading among others. He danced with Ballet San Antonio before joining Ballet Idaho in 2011, where he has danced principal roles in The Nutcracker, Scheherezade, Swan Lake and Balanchine’s Serenade, He has performed as a guest artist in numerous places across the country, including Lincoln Midwest Ballet, Anchorage Ballet and Sun Valley Ballet.

Nathan has spent several summers with Ballet Montana under Sallyann Mulcahy who commissioned from him two choreographic works. Nathan has been choreographing frequently for Ballet Idaho and in 2012 he had his Ballet Idaho main-stage choreographic debut with a new ballet Timepiece, which reviewer Dana Oland from Idaho Statesman called “a fun character ballet with a sci-fi twist.” His work “What you Wanted for Me” was selected from a pool of over 200 applicants to be a part of the Dance Gallery Festival at Sam Houston State University in Hunstville, TX in October 2017.

He has also choreographed works for Anchorage Ballet, Ballet Montana Northern Plains Dance, and the Boise Dance Co-op. Nathan also has expanded his choreographic reach to video including a work set in outdoor Idaho with music he wrote and performed himself.

He is also an avid teacher of dance and teaches a number of adult ballet classes regularly. Nathan has taught as a guest instructor for Youth Ballet of Saskatchewan, North Ballet Academy (MN), Sun Valley Ballet, and Anchorage Ballet. He also is a teacher for Dance for Parkinson’s Idaho, an organization that offers movement classes for students with Parkinson’s disease, which give the students a sense of community and lets them enjoy the art of dance.
